First blog post! An introduction is in order.

Hi guys! This is my first ever blog post. I should probably start by introducing myself. As you would know by now I’m James. I grew up in a small country town in Gippsland, Victoria called Sale. For a good part of my life I lived on my parent’s beef cattle farm. You mind find it ironic that I am now vegetarian. You really find out who you are when you move away from your family and friends!

For a long time I didn’t know what I wanted out of life or what I wanted to do with myself. It wasn’t until I moved to Darwin that I started to really enjoy taking photos and realised photography is what I wanted to do. Being an introvert, photography was the perfect hobby for me. Nothing makes me feel more alive than getting out in to nature and being able to capture and share what I love makes it all the more enjoyable.

I started out my journey with a Sony RX100 II which is handy little point and shoot camera that easily fit in my pocket. I would go on nature walks or walk along the beach and always had the little camera with me.

Here’s one of my favourite photos taken with the Sony RX100 II taken in Palmerston, NT.

I was using auto mode for everything until I discovered long exposures, then I realised that the possibilities of photography were endless. I read tutorials and watched videos until I had a good understanding of the exposure triangle. Studying will only get you so far and so I experimented every chance I had. I eventually upgraded to a full frame camera which opened up a whole new world of possibilities and once I purchased a telephoto lens I was able to start photographing wildlife around Darwin. Which lead to me exploring further out of town, visiting the different conservation reserves and national parks. I hate to think of the amount of money I’ve spent on fuel driving around! I love to capture landscapes but being around and photographing wildlife is definitely my favourite.

I urge anyone who enjoys taking photos to buy a proper camera. Start with something small, learn and experiment and work your way up.

I’ve had my website up and running for over a year now and will hopefully be uploading more content from now on and keeping the site more up-to-date. Stay tuned!
